Daxter is a PSP (PlayStationPortable) game created by Ready at Dawn. It was packaged together with a limited edition PlayStationPortable Slim and Lite. It is a game that stars Daxter from the Jak and Daxter games. All the Jax and Daxter games' stories are all connected with one another. It is a continuation of one after the other. Daxter is actually the fifth instalment for this gaming series. Aside from this, this is the first game of the series that stars Daxter and not Jak.
If you don't know who Daxter is, he is the sidekick of Jak in the Jak and Daxter video game instalments. Daxter is a human-like character who lived in Sandover Village and is Jak's friend. In the game, Jax and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, both characters go to Misty Island where they were forbidden to go. After they have reached their destination, they witnessed a gathering of Lurkers being ordered by two cruel people. After having seen the cruelty that was done to the Lurkers, the characters got paranoid and wanted to get out of the island. When they were about to get off, they saw the pool of Dark Eco. Daxter starts checking the Dark pool and Jak sees a little Red Eco barrel. When they were just about to leave, a Lurker Commander assaults them. Jak throws the barrel at the commander and kills it but the blast flings Daxter into the Dark Eco pit. Although Daxter gets out of the pit safely, he has been changed into an animal that's half otter and half weasel.
After this incident, they go back to Sandover Village and they look for Samos, Sage of Green Eco, to help Daxter transform back to his normal state. However, Samos said that he wouldn't be able to help Daxter and that it is only Gol Acheron, Sage of Dark Eco, who could help him and he lives far away. Therefore, Jax and Daxter go on a trip to look for Gol. However, Gol and his sister, Maia, had been already corrupted by Dark Eco and they were the two cruel people who tortured the Lurker back in Misty Island. Eventually, Jak goes into a fight with Gol and Maia and wins over them with the help of the four Eco Sages power, which could form into White Eco. Daxter has an epiphany and realize that the White Eco could change him back to normal. However, he is forced to make a tough decision and he decides to let Jak save the world and let him stay that way forever.
At the start of the game Daxter, Daxter boasts to the bar's customers about his supposed escapades. He was able to make much impression to his listeners except for Osmo, an old man who heads the Kridder Ridder Extermination Company, who sees potential in Daxter and offers him a job as an exterminator. Although Daxter isn't sure about getting the job, he eventually gets convinced by Osmo. Daxter then completes his bug-related missions, such as going through strip mines, a distillery, a forest, a fish cannery, a construction site, and a hotel, while looking for Jak and free him from prison. He was also tasked to finish vehicle-related missions that were also concerned with bug extermination.
When the game is nearing to its end, the game fills in the gaps to lead the plot of the story to the game, Jak II. There are even some small climactic events that will be previewed in Daxter and seen in the next game.
Thanks to Daxter's new job, he gets to use new weapons, one of which is the Electro-swatter. The Electro-swatter becomes his weapon of choice when fighting enemies. Another weapon or fighting tool he uses is an extermination that uses bug spray to shock enemies. The tank can eventually me modified.
The game Daxter, has a single-player, which already makes the game worthy to play, a multi-player mode and bug combat. If you use the multi-player mode, during the game you'll find hidden pickups. These hidden pickups are caged bugs, spells, and boots that will help the player get through his or her missions. Once you have collected these pickups, you can play the bug combat mode. The bug combat doesn't really do much for the game, however, it is still considered to be a good addition to it.
In every stage of the game, objectives must be completed. These objectives mostly include killing opponents, obliterating insect hives, or gathering items. During the game, the player can opt to do two optional secondary objectives, which are collecting Metal Bug gems and orbs. If he or she is not able to complete the secondary objectives, that's okay as long as he's able to complete his primary mission or main objective.
Basically, most of the gameplay of Daxter consists of fighting enemies and completing obstacles. However, there are still other elements added along the way that makes the game more interesting.
The game has received good criticisms from both players and critics. Daxter is said to be a gorgeous game with outstanding sound and music. It is also said to have a wonderful adaptation of the regular Jak gameplay. Aside from this, it was said that the game was interesting because a lot of things can be done in the game, which gives the person a reason to play it repeatedly. However, despite its good reviews there are still some bad ones. Some critics said that there are some slight control and camera issues in the game. They also said that using the same Jak formula can either make the game, Daxter, better or worse.
In spite of the negative feedback it received, it can still be said that overall, Daxter is a great game.
